The gameplay of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan was an action-packed hack and slashes adventure. The game had a cel-shaded artstyle and allowed players to control the title characters, including Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael, from a third-person perspective. Each turtle had a unique style of ninjutsu, making them distinct in their own way. Moreover, the turtles had four interchangeable ultimate abilities that they shared with each other from a well-sized list. For instance, Leonardo could slow down time, and Michelangelo could perform cheerleading that reset the cooldowns of other turtles’ abilities.
One of the most exciting aspects of the game was that players could shift between turtles at will in the single-player campaign. As such, players could make the most of each turtle’s abilities. The turtles could perform successive attacks to create a combo, parkour, and use parachutes while traveling around the game’s world. The game also allowed players to fight with villains such as Shredder, Krang, Bebop, and Rocksteady, who appeared in the comic book series.
The game’s developers had high aspirations for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan, but it failed to meet their expectations. The game received mixed reviews, primarily due to its repetitiveness and lack of a compelling storyline. Critics argued that there was little excitement in the game and that it felt monotonous from the start. The difficulty levels of the game received criticism for being too easy, with visual and sound effects that some believed to be unimpressive. Perhaps the most significant drawback of the game was its shortness, with the campaign only spanning around seven hours of gameplay.
It was unfortunate that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan faced an untimely death. The game had a lot of potential, but developers failed to implement it effectively. Considering that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book series has such a vast fan base, the game should have been better. Activision losing the rights for the series after this game’s release was possibly due to low sales numbers. Although the game had many flaws, it does not take away the fact that playing as your favorite turtle and battling enemies in this hack and slash game was indeed a fun experience.
