God of War: Ghost of Sparta is a video game available on the PlayStation Portable (PSP) handheld console. It was developed by Ready at Dawn and published by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE). The game is the sixth installment in the God of War series and is based on Greek mythology, set in ancient Greece with the theme of vengeance. It was released on November 2, 2010. The game’s protagonist, Kratos, who is the God of War, is struggling with memories of his mortal past. He decides to uncover his origins and travels to Atlantis. There, he meets his mother Callisto who informs him that his brother Deimos is alive. Kratos sets out on a quest to rescue Deimos from the Domain of Death. Although Deimos initially resents his brother, the two eventually come together to fight their captor, the God of Death named Thanatos.
The gameplay of Ghost of Sparta remains faithful to the God of War formula, with fluid, fast-paced combat and intricate puzzle-solving mechanics. However, it also introduces several new features, such as the Arms of Sparta, which allow Kratos to grow tentacle-like appendages from his body to attack enemies and traverse obstacles. The game also features more expansive environments, such as the sunken city of Atlantis and the temple of Thanatos. These areas are not only stunningly rendered but also offer unique challenges and opportunities for exploration.
The storyline of Ghost of Sparta takes place after the events of the first game, where Kratos has become the God of War. However, he’s still haunted by the memories of his mortal past and seeks to uncover the truth about his origins. His journey takes him to Atlantis, where he learns that his younger brother Deimos, whom he thought was long dead, is still alive. Kratos then embarks on a perilous quest to rescue his brother from the Domain of Death and ultimately confronts Thanatos, the God of Death himself. Along the way, Kratos encounters various gods, monsters, and characters from Greek mythology, such as Callisto, Atlas, and Erinys.
One of the standout features of Ghost of Sparta is its graphics and visual design. Utilizing the full potential of the PSP handheld console, the game boasts stunning, highly-detailed environments and character models. The visuals are also complemented by the game’s dynamic cinematics, which seamlessly mix gameplay and cutscenes to create a truly immersive experience. The game’s soundtrack, composed by Gerard Marino, also adds to the game’s epic atmosphere, with bombastic, orchestral compositions that perfectly capture the essence of Greek mythology.
Despite being released over a decade ago, Ghost of Sparta still holds up as a masterpiece of game design. Its impact can be seen in subsequent entries in the God of War series, such as 2018’s critically acclaimed sequel. The game’s legacy can also be seen in the countless imitations and homages it has inspired over the years, both in the gaming industry and beyond.
