The tale begins when the hero is trying to go from a hot air balloon to Selphia, but he (or she) is pushed out of the balloon by a band of robbers and falls into Selphia, losing his/her memory. When the main character was discovered, the residents mistook him for a member of the Royal Family and came to administer the town. Prince Arthur appeared shortly after, strangely happy and ready to hand over his job to the protagonist. You may pick between two female and male characters at the start of the game, who will run the town and live a regular life.
You can converse with other characters, even flirt with bachelors. There are six bachelors in the game, each with its own charm. You may marry a bachelor when your relationship is strong enough, and you may have children as a result of this union. You can also solve the mysteries buried in the dungeon near town by engaging in social interactions. In Rune Factory 4, you’ll be able to control up to three characters in fights, and even your children may fight at your side. Unlike other RPG games of the same type that prioritize experience and leveling over making the character stronger, Rune Factory 4 is more about crafting than anything else, allowing players to seek for necessary resources to make unique and powerful items.
