The Mario vs. Donkey Kong series is a sub-series of the Mario and Donkey Kong series, based on puzzle video games. The series marks the return of Pauline and the rivalry between Mario and Donkey Kong. The first game in the series, Mario vs. Donkey Kong, was released in 2004 for the Game Boy Advance.

The story of the first game revolves around Donkey Kong becoming enamored with Pauline and kidnapping her. Mario pursues Donkey Kong through a series of stages, using his lanky limbs to reach platforms and defeat enemies. Along the way, he collects items to help him reach his goal. When Mario finally catches up to Donkey Kong, he must rescue Pauline from a giant cage while avoiding barrels, fireballs, and other obstacles. After saving Pauline, the two ride off into the sunset together.

The rivalry between Mario and Donkey Kong is one that has spanned many years and multiple video game console generations. It all started with a simple kidnapping story but has since evolved into something much more complex.
