Donkey Kong Country Returns ROM is a side-scrolling 2.5D platform game developed by Retro Studios for the Wii. It is the fourth installment in the Donkey Kong Country series, and a direct sequel to the original Donkey Kong Country trilogy, released for Super Nintendo Entertainment System between 1994 and 1996. The game was announced at E3 2010 and released in November 2010.
The story follows Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong as they set out to recover their stolen banana hoard from King K. Rool and his henchmen. The game introduces new elements to the series, such as cooperative play between the two protagonists using different abilities, Collectibles called “K-O-N-G Letters”, and hidden Puzzle Pieces that unlock artwork when found. Donkey Kong Country Returns is a side-scrolling platformer where the player controls Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, who can team up to perform unique cooperative moves. The game Features eight worlds that the player must progress through by completing objectives such as collecting items, defeating bosses, and reaching the end of a level.
The game was well-received upon release, with critics praising its graphics, level design, soundtrack, and gameplay mechanics. It was commercially successful, selling over 4.5 million copies worldwide. A port for the Nintendo 3DS was released in May 2011, which featured stereoscopic 3D visuals and new content not present in the original Wii version. A sequel, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, was released for the Wii U in February 2014.
