Let’s face it, the Super Nintendo was home to some of the best video games ever made. From classics like Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country to cult hits like Earthbound and Chrono Trigger, the SNES had something for everyone. But if we’re being honest, there was one game that stood above the rest: Sonic The Hedgehog. Here are five reasons why Sonic The Hedgehog is the best Super Nintendo game ever made.

1. The Graphics Were Revolutionary
When Sonic The Hedgehog debuted on the Sega Genesis in 1991, its colorful graphics and fast-paced gameplay were unlike anything gamers had ever seen before. When the game made its way to the Super Nintendo two years later, its 16-bit graphics were a huge step up from anything else on the market. In a time when most games were still using sprites, Sonic The Hedgehog’s use of pre-rendered 3D graphics was truly ahead of its time.

2. The Soundtrack Was catchy as Hell
Few video game soundtracks are as iconic as Sonic The Hedgehog’s. From the unforgettable opening theme song to classic tracks like “Green Hill Zone” and “Chemical Plant Zone,” the music in Sonic The Hedgehog perfectly captured the game’s high-energy tone. It’s no wonder that many of the game’s tracks have gone on to be remixes and covered by other artists over the years.

3. The Gameplay Was Fast and Fun
Sonic The Hedgehog was all about speed, and its gameplay reflected that. Players could zip through levels at breakneck speeds, collecting rings and power-ups along the way. While some players found it tough to keep up with Sonic’s lightning-fast pace, others loved how the game emphasized speed and reflexes over slow-and-steady platforming gameplay . It was this focus on speed that would go on to define subsequent games in the series.
